Fed Cuts Borrowing Costs for Second Instance This Year During Economic Uncertainty

The US monetary authority lowered borrowing costs on Wednesday, marking the second reduction this year during financial volatility originating from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.

Decision Arrives at Extraordinary Time for Central Bank

The move to cut the key rate by a 0.25% to a range of 3.75% to 4% comes at an extraordinary moment for the Fed. The authority has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs despite persistent inflation.

Central Bank Announcement Highlights Job Market Changes

In a statement, the Fed said that the jobless rate had increased but stays modest. “Job gains have decelerated,” the statement reads. “Price increases has risen and remains moderately high.”

Federal Closure Hinders Central Bank’s Task

The ongoing government stoppage, now one of the longest in US history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Collection of important financial statistics has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the BLS are furloughed during the closure.

Information Shortage Affects Monetary Moves

The Federal Reserve typically analyzes BLS data to determine employment trends, such as the number of new jobs added to the market and the present jobless percentage. The last jobs report was released in the beginning of last month, before the closure, and gave a relatively bleak snapshot of the jobs market in August.

The figure of positions created to the economy in August was lower by more than 100,000 since the spring, and joblessness crept up to 4.3% – the peak since three years ago.

Alternative Reports Show Continued Slowdown

Though the bureau was scheduled to publish September’s employment data in early October, it suspended its publication when the shutdown began. Employment data company a leading payroll processor indicated earlier this month that the business segment cut thirty-two thousand jobs in last month, a indication that the job market is continuing to slow.

“Both the supply and demand for labor has declined significantly,” Fed chair the Fed chairman said earlier this month, a trend he had earlier attributed stems from immigration and tariff policies.

Inflation Report Shows Moderate Rise

Though BLS’s jobs report has been suspended, the agency still issued its inflation report for last month that indicated that costs are rising, although slowly. Costs increased 3% over the past twelve months, the highest since January. In spring, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is two percent.
