Labuschagne Dropped from Australian ODI Team Against Team India

Marnus Labuschagne has been dropped from Australia's three-match ODI series facing India, with high-performing Queensland colleague Matt Renshaw earning a shock call-up.

Performance Issues Result in Omission

Labuschagne has been omitted from the one-day international squad following managing only a single run in each of his two innings during the top-end series against South Africa in August. The right-hander has a highest score of 47 in his last 10 ODI batting appearances.

The batsman has featured in 68 one-day internationals and scored 1,871 runs at an batting average of 34.64 runs per dismissal, but will now focus on earning a Test team comeback ahead of the Ashes starting in Perth on November 21.

Surprise Inclusion and Other Squad Changes

There have been indications of a improvement in form with 160 for Queensland in the Sheffield Shield this week, while Renshaw made a hundred for the Bulls in the identical match against Tasmania.

Renshaw is in line to make his white-ball international debut in the upcoming series against India after his last inclusion in an ODI squad in 2022.

The left-hander has played 14 Tests with the last coming in India in 2023 but is also aiming for a return to the Test team as Australia search for a fix to their top-order woes.

Pace Returns and Fitness Updates

Left-arm quick Mitchell Starc makes a comeback for the ODI series against India after taking a break since excelling for Australia in the clean sweep of West Indies in July.

BBL performer Mitch Owen could make his ODI debut after being concussed in the build-up to Australia’s previous 50-over series against South Africa.

ODI captain Pat Cummins remains on the sidelines as he aims to recover from a spinal issue by the time to captain Australia in the first Ashes Test in November.

Team Announcement Approach and Fixtures

Australia have selected a squad for only the first two T20s against India with the Ashes on the horizon, although Glenn Maxwell will miss all of the five-match series due to a wrist problem sustained in New Zealand.

Mitch Marsh will captain both the ODI and T20 sides after hitting a ton in the final game against New Zealand to seal a 2-0 series win last week.

“Selectors have announced a squad for the ODI series and initial two matches of the T20 series as there will be some management through the back end of the series as individuals prepare for the summer through Sheffield Shield cricket,” selection chief George Bailey said.
“The majority of the T20 squad will stay as a group as it’s an crucial phase in the preparation for the World Cup next year, however we are trying to strike a balance to ensure we simultaneously prepare certain individuals for the Test matches ahead.”

Australia’s three-game ODI series against India starts on October 19 in Perth, before the rivals play five T20s from 29 October.
