Whenever a prominent awards ceremony nears, there’s always a clamor for the addition fresh award types to honor overlooked contributions and delight the spirits of followers dedicated to specific genres.
My colleague previously argued supporting a scary games classification. That would be fantastic. The same goes for strategy board titles, representing a passionate advocate's mission. But they will have to forgive me for pushing forward because like all single-minded supporters, I possess a compelling case for why my demand is the most urgent above others. The demand is this: We need a category for puzzle games.
The Genre Classification Challenge
Classifying creative works isn't exact; it’s very subjective, and it will always generate discussions and end in fuzzy definitions. There’s a reason movie academies avoid this approach. But it is an essential concession in the world of interactive entertainment, which are so diverse they barely qualify a single creative category.
For comprehensive acknowledgment of achievement in video games to receive acknowledgment, and for games of all stripes to compete fairly, specific award classifications remain vital.
Existing Game Classification System
Leading game ceremonies offer these genre categories for Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these six categories actually cover numerous genres, allowing placement for most games within them.
This doesn't apply to brain-teasing titles. No appropriate category exists for their placement. Think about these outstanding current releases, each quite distinct: building puzzles from a specific release, intense tile-matching in a different title, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles from additional release. Which classification works within current classifications? Simply put, no category fits.
Acknowledgment Issues
There are dozens outstanding logic titles launched regularly without proper recognition at major award shows, except when they manage to fit award groups including Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging independent game categories.
- One classic puzzle game got overlooked for anything in 2014
- A different innovative game was excluded that year
- Popular arranging title got ignored recently
- Just some puzzle games scraped into independent or mobile categories
Significance of Puzzle Games
These are often compact experiences, yet the craft behind logic titles is of massive significance. Iconic mobile puzzle games stand as most popular titles globally continuing this trend for an extended period.
The legendary block-stacking game challenges famous sandbox experiences competing to become most purchased experience; it’s also in the running for best game of all time. Logic titles represent cornerstones for gaming as medium, and they are in conversation across multiple categories.
The Solution and Justification
Logic titles wouldn't face such difficulty. One could readily select a field of five interesting, varied, worthy titles each ceremony simply — perhaps, with difficulty, since numerous excellent so many good games out.
And to reiterate, these include experiences lacking appropriate categories in important events. Puzzle game makers are working at the challenging frontier game development, creating some of the purest expressions of gaming itself. Just like cinema stunt performers, they deserve recognition. Don't make them wait decades.
